A fan in the ceiling is a great option to keep the air circulating in a room. There are other types of fans, of course such as pedestal fans, but nothing beats a fan mounted in the ceiling. It is easy to see how one can mount a fan in the ceiling when the ceilings are vaulted, or of the ten foot variety, but what about those who have the standard 8 foot ceilings. Can we have a ceiling fan as well? Yes, with low profile ceiling fans.

Most commonly, ceiling fans are supplied with a down rod. This rod or pipe allows the fan to be mounted at eight or more inches below the ceiling. The down rod attaches the fan motor to the framing of the home and electrical wires are threaded through the rod to supply power to the fan and attached lights.

Now, if the ceiling is 8 feet, one needs a fan sitting flush with the ceiling, a so called low profile ceiling fan, or a flush mount ceiling fan.

Older readers may remember older department stores with a balcony having ceiling fans in the front part of the store that had down rods that lowered the fan ten to twelve feet from the actual ceiling Flush mount ceiling fans, do not have the down rod, but have the motor in a housing that is mounted flush with the ceiling.

With raising utility costs, a ceiling fan is a great way to reduce your electrical bill. Rooms with a fan can easily be maintained at a couple of degrees higher without losing comfort. Placing a fan in the bedroom is a great money saver as well!

Low Profile Ceiling Fans- A Great Option For Low Ceilings

A low profile ceiling fan can help to save money in the winter as well. With reversing the fan blades, the warmer air at the right under the ceiling will be gently mixed with the cooler air, towards the flooring, making for an even heating of the room, using less power.

In the spring or fall, with the windows open, a ceiling fan may be all the cooling that is required to keep your home comfortable.

If your ceiling is particularly low, or there is risk for someone very tall to bump into the ceiling fan blades, you may just want to install the ceiling fan. If the ceiling height will allow you to do so, you may want to consider adding a light kit to the fan. The wall switch can be wired in order to operate the fan lights, and the fan itself independently. A remote can also be programmed for independent operation.

Mounting any ceiling fan requires a special electrical box be installed that will support the weight, vibration and rotation of the fan. Do not install a ceiling fan on the existing electrical box. This could allow the fan to fall and cause injury to you or a loved one.

Once the fan has been installed, the installation may need some fine tuning if the fan vibrates at the higher speeds. Baslancing the fan blades is a pretty easy procedure adding weights to the different blades. The owners manual that accompanies the fan will have instructions on how to proceed.

A low profile ceiling fan can make your home more comfortable and energy efficient.
